6 Diabetes Prevention Tips for National Diabetes Awareness Month

November 24, 2017

Diabetes is a long-term medical condition that causes increased blood sugar levels. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 30.3 million people in the United States are diagnosed with Diabetes. That makes up about 9.4 percent of the population.

Pre-Diabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are high, but not high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetes. It has been found that around 70 percent of the people who have a pre-diabetic condition will go on to have Diabetes.

It is at this stage that prevention is most necessary. We at Well Life Family Medicine have outlined some tips for you. Read on:

Engage in Physical Activity

Regularly exercising can help great in preventing diabetes. When you keep your body moving, the insulin sensitivity in your cells enhances. This means that less insulin will be required to keep blood sugar levels in check.

Some of the specific exercises you should work on are strength training, aerobics and high-intensity interval training.

Get Rid of the Smoking Habit

There’s been research that smoking, and even passive smoking, might lead to Type 2 Diabetes. Whether you need gum or nicotine patches, know what works for you and kick the smoking habit.

Not just for Diabetes, it will be the healthiest improvement you can make.

Lose Weight

It’s not as if all obese people go on to develop diabetes – it’s still a major risk factor. It has been found that even losing just a few pounds is beneficial for preventing Diabetes.

Losing weight also requires you to adopt healthy lifestyle choices, such as exercising and eating low-carb food – factors that are good for Diabetes prevention.

Add Fiber to Your Diet

Fiber is great for your gut’s health and helps you manage weight more effectively. What’s more, it keeps blood sugar levels low and provides better insulin control.

Make sure you increase your fiber-intake.

Remove Sugar and Refined Carb from Your Diet

Sugar and refined carbs in your food are the biggest risk factors for Diabetes. In a pre-diabetic state, the body’s cells are not as vulnerable to the insulin’s action and therefore, sugar levels stay high. To cater to this, the pancreas has to create more insulin to bring blood sugar levels down. Over time, this can lead to Type 2 Diabetes.

Drink As Much Water As You Can

In a pre-diabetic state, water is your best friend. This is because the alternatives (sugary beverages) are not very helpful.

What’s more, research has shown that increased water consumption can produce better blood sugar control and enhance insulin response of the body – two things essential for Diabetes prevention.
